(11/11/08) New "inclusive courses" include Liberation Theology and Women and Crime
The administration of St. Anselm College in New Hampshire is seeking to make the campus more welcoming to “students of other Christian denominations, religions, and different sexual orientations,” as well as to bolster minority enrollment. This is part of a campus-wide diversity initiative for which the college created the new position “assistant to the president for inclusiveness.” The college added liberation theology, women and crime and other “inclusive courses" to the curriculum.
One graduate expressed concern about the direction the college is taking. “It could end up being like in the name of inclusiveness the college will have to accept certain things that are contrary to the Catholic identity. On the face of it, having a more diverse student body is a good idea. That has to be juxtaposed with a firm understanding of their Catholic identity." Another graduate criticized the idea of focusing on race in admissions and proposed the college concentrate on “academics and Catholic identity" instead.
A St. Anselm Senior also voiced concern: "But, respecting everyone does not and cannot mean abandoning or watering down your beliefs so that everything is right and nothing is wrong, so that you can avoid offending anyone," he said, also hoping that the college would “remain vigilant in upholding its identity.” Source: Union Leader
