(1/14/09) CNS opposed Kmiec appearances on campus during election season
Professor Douglas Kmiec, who perhaps had more influence than any other making the argument that Catholics could vote for pro-abortion Obama during the 2008 presidential race, was often sharply criticized in Catholic circles for publicly making his case. Kmiec is now pointing the finger at “right wing Catholic bloggers,” whom he calls “my online tormentors,” for allegedly distorting his position, making ad hominem attacks on him, and damaging the relationship between the new administration and the Holy See. Kmiec also complains that “to be remade by a hateful blogosphere has its price, I’ve learned. I worry that such invitations to speak at Catholic colleges, and the fruitful exchanges these invitations make possible, will be fewer.” During the election season, when Kmiec was most vocal, The Cardinal Newman Society opposed and made known appearances of Kmiec on Catholic campuses. These included Marywood University, Seton Hill University (which was also opposed by Bishop Lawrence Brandt), and the University of Detroit Mercy. Source: Catholic News Agency
