(3/3/09) College will either close permanently or lose Catholic identity
College of Santa Fe, a Catholic institution of higher education, is continuing to seek a New Mexico state take-over to avoid closing its doors. The college has accrued more than $35 million in debt. Recently, the New Mexico House of Representatives voted 49 to 16 in approval of “a bill that could clear the way for the state to take over the debt-ridden College of Santa Fe.” If the bill is not passed in the New Mexico Senate, College of Santa Fe is expected to permanently shut down operations at the end of the semester. However, if the bill succeeds the college will lose its Catholic identity. Source: KRQE
