(3/20/09) "We wanted to show solidarity...that this is something a lot of students care about."
On Wednesday, March 18, a petition signed by more than 2,300 students and some faculty members at the University of Notre Dame, asking that sexual orientation be added to the university’s nondiscrimination clause, was presented to President Jenkins. Students protested outside the campus Main Building in support of the cause. “We wanted to show solidarity… that this is something a lot of students care about,” said a student protestor. The same petition took place last year with roughly equal student support, but elicited no response from the administration. However, The Observer reports that a student alleges to have a meeting scheduled with Notre Dame President Jenkins for March 30, supposedly to talk about the petition. Students also outlined the goals of obtaining official club status for OUTreach ND and Alliance ND, unofficial groups which aim to promote the issues pertaining to the “gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning” community on Notre Dame’s campus.
