(8/25/09) Towey focuses on the VA's 52-page end-of-life planning document, "Your Life, Your Choices."
Jim Towey, President of Catholic Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, wrote an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on August 18 arguing against an anti-life policy of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Towey focuses on the VA’s 52-page end-of-life planning document, “Your Life, Your Choices”, which was suspended in the Bush administration and recently revived in the Obama administration. “Your Life, Your Choices”, according to Towey, “presents end-of-life choices in a way aimed at steering users toward predetermined conclusions.” Towey notes that the only organization listed as a resource on advance directives in the new document is the Hemlock Society, which is listed in the directory of International Right to Die organizations published by the Euthanasia Research and Guidance Organization. “If President Obama is sincere in stating that he is not trying to cut costs by pressuring the disabled to forgo critical care,” argues the Catholic college president, “one good way to show that commitment is to walk two blocks from the Oval Office and pull the plug on ‘Your Life, Your Choices’.” Source: The Wall Street Journal
