Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, dedicated its new Chapel of the Holy Spirit on Sunday, September 27. The 500-seat chapel includes a 2,000 square foot mosaic created by a Jesuit priest who also designed John Paul II’s Redemptoris Mater chapel at the Vatican. In 12 days Fr. Rupnik and 15 co-workers installed the one-of-a-kind mosaic. According to The New York Times which wrote on the dedication, the workers assembled more than 200,000 mosaic pieces by hand. The finished faces of the two-dozen biblical figures were shipped from Rome. “It was a remarkable, spiritual two weeks,” said David Coppola, Sacred Heart’s assistant vice president, of the installation process. Anthony J. Cernera, president of Sacred Heart, argued that the new chapel was a challenge to the false “spiritual but not religious” mindset frequently prevalent among college students. “It would be a terrible mistake to fall into the trap of accepting that dichotomy,” he said. “The best way to be spiritual in the Catholic tradition is to celebrate the Eucharist and to use all the signs of the faith.” Source: Whispers in the Loggia
