(10/8/09) EEOC recently infringed on Catholic Belmont Abbey College's religious liberty
Chai R. Feldblum, an Obama nominee for Commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC), is also a professor at the Law Center of Georgetown University who has written extensively in support of gay “marriage” and is a former employee of the pro-abortion American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Campaign Fund. According to the White House press release announcing the nomination, Feldblum “has also worked on advancing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights and has been a leading expert on the Employment Nondiscrimination Act.” In an article penned by Feldblum, entitled Moral Conflict and Liberty: Gay Rights and Religion, she proposed “that we gain something as a society if we acknowledge that a law requiring individuals to act in a certain way might burden some individuals’ belief liberty.” The news of Feldblum’s nomination is especially noteworthy for Catholics given the EEOC’s recent infringement on Catholic Belmont Abbey College’s religious liberty by claiming it discriminated against women when it removed contraceptive coverage from its employee health insurance plan. If confirmed by the Senate, Feldblum would serve on the EEOC for five years and could decide cases related to abortion, contraception and homosexuality as they relate to employee health insurance and employment policies.
