(10/13/09) "Consent is Sexy" throws doubts on "traditional views about gender and sexuality"
Eric Cunningham, a history professor at Gonzaga University, is “vexed” about an official’s apparent neutrality toward students’ “Consent is Sexy” campaign, which features the slogan on student t-shirts to oppose violence against women. In late September, The Gonzaga Bulletin printed a section called “Ask Sue! Answers from the Student Life Vice President.” Student Life VP Sue Weitz explained the use of the campaign by the Men’s Violence Protection club. According to a description of the campaign provided by Ignatius Insight Scoop, “Consent is Sexy” promotes consent as an “important part of healthy sexuality.” The campaign also “questions traditional views about gender and sexuality” and promotes “communication, respect and honesty” which “make sex and relationships better.” But the description of the “Consent is Sexy” campaign says nothing about promoting abstinence before marriage, raising serious concerns. “Turning to the issue of our Catholic identity and the obligations it presents,” Cunningham wrote in response to Weitz, “it is immediately clear that the slogan ‘consent is sexy’ has no place anywhere at a Catholic university.” Source: Ignatius Insight Scoop
