(10/21/09) Abortion and sterilization are excluded, but contraceptive coverage will continue.
The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) reported earlier in October that Boston College (BC), a Jesuit and Catholic institution of higher education, provides coverage for prescription contraceptives and abortifacients in its student health insurance plan as required by Massachusetts state law. BC student newspaper The Observer now reports that Boston College is “continuing a review of its” plan. Thomas McGuinness, Director of Counseling at BC, said that the review is part of an annual effort to maintain quality health insurance while “ensuring that it falls in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church.” McGuinness confirmed that abortion and sterilization are specifically excluded from the policy, but said that BC would continue to cover prescription contraceptives.
