(11/10/09) Any group "inconsistent with Catholic teachings is not going to be accepted" for charter.
An anonymous group of students at Saint Louis University (SLU), a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education, has started an unauthorized campus group called B*llikens for Choice, The University News reports. The new group, which started in reaction to Respect Life Week last month, wants “to give a voice to the pro-choice community at SLU,” according to the news site. The SLU dean of students Scott Smith told The University News there was little chance of the new group becoming a Chartered Student Organization. "Any group that's trying to get chartered with something that's inconsistent with Catholic teachings is not going to be accepted. [The students] could try to explore the process, but at the end of the day, there's just no way that a group that might be advocating things that are inconsistent with Catholic teaching can be approved," Smith told the news site. He continued, “If we knew who the students were, we'd like to have a conversation with them about … how this represents the University, correctly or incorrectly, and with the expectation that steps be taken to address those concerns.” The SLU associate VP of marketing and communications contacted the group and they have since stopped using “Billiken” in their name, the news site reports, and B*llikens for Choice is not allowed to use any images or names associating themselves with SLU. The group’s blog includes a disclaimer disassociating it from the University. Source: Saint Louis University
