Dr. John Deely, philosophy professor at the University of St. Thomas Center for Thomistic Studies, was awarded The Aquinas Medal for Excellence in Christian Philosophy at the inaugural North American International Étienne Gilson Society Congress held from October 1 to 3 at Loyola University Maryland. The theme of the event was “Thomist Humanism and the Future of Civilization.” Dr. Deely was selected to receive the award due to his “longtime service to Christian philosophy and his tenacious use of Catholic philosophical heritage as a means to engage and advance contemporary philosophical culture.” At the Congress, Dr. Deely presented an address entitled “Why Thomist Humanism Needs to Redefine ‘Human.’” On October 22, Dr. Deely was also awarded the Maritain Medal for scholarly achievement at the 33rd Annual International American Maritain Association Conference in Houston.
