U.S. bishops' censure Marquette theologian Daniel Maguire for falsifying Catholic teaching
Following the U.S. bishops' censure of Marquette University theologian Daniel Maguire for falsifying Catholic teaching, the Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) has told Marquette's president, "The Daniel Maguire scandals must end." "Marquette employs Maguire as an expert theologian despite his repeated violations of the principles and methods of Catholic theology," CNS president Patrick J. Reilly writes today in a letter to Marquette University president Rev. Robert Wild, S.J. "…Students can rightly question why a Catholic university's theology department includes a former priest who falsifies Catholic teaching and disputes infallible doctrine as the basis of his scholarly work." The Committee on Doctrine of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)—echoing concerns previously expressed by Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan—declared last week that Maguire's teachings "cross the legitimate lines of theological reflection and simply enter into the area of false teaching." Although the bishops commented only on particular pamphlets published by Maguire to argue that abortion, contraception and homosexual "marriage" are acceptable in Catholic teaching—despite the Church's clear condemnation of such activity—the pamphlets' content is typical of Maguire's teaching over the span of many years.
