Walsh University

Established in 1960 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction in North Canton, Ohio, Walsh University became an independent Catholic university in 2021. Especially in recent years, Walsh has also distinguished itself by a strong embrace of its Catholic identity.

Walsh offers more than 60 academic majors, including liberal arts fields as well as many programs in business, education, and nursing. Its general education curriculum covers 50 percent of the credits required for graduation and includes at least five courses between Catholic theology and philosophy. A service learning course is a requirement for all students. About half of Walsh’s students and half the professors are Catholic, and all theology professors have a mandatum from the local bishop.

The University offers daily Mass and Confession times and provides opportunities for Eucharistic adoration. In campus residences, the sexes are separated by wing or floor.

There is a wide variety of student clubs, intramural sports, and other activities. Walsh sponsors 28 sports, 25 of which are in the NCAA Division II. The campus is located in North Canton, a largely residential area, with many opportunities for local jobs and internships and just one hour from Cleveland.

The president of Walsh University, Dr. Tim Collins, says that the most successful students come to the College “curious” about life and the world. The University helps form them “intellectually and morally,” providing a framework for making good choices.

The University takes seriously its efforts to share the faith through courses and campus life. For a Catholic student looking for faithful education in one of the many majors, and at a good price, Walsh University is a blessing to many Catholic families.

What we really like:

Although Walsh University is a bit like “mission territory” with many non-Catholic students, it has been steadfast in its fidelity to Catholic teachings. In the last few years, the University has worked to strengthen Catholic identity and increase the portion of Catholics on the faculty.
